Sensual, Grief, and Nature Artistry on Reclaimed Barnwood
by Ina Z. (aka “Knotty Canvas”)
Welcome to my cozy corner of creativity here in Toronto, where my Lithuanian roots and love for reclaimed wood shape my artistic journey. Through each piece, I explore the delicate beauty of feminine sensuality, the raw depth of human emotions, and our profound connection to nature. Life’s knots—where joy and grief often meet—become part of the story I tell in my art. Together, let’s appreciate life’s imperfections, finding beauty in the rough textures and celebrating the journey with each meaningful brushstroke.

How It Started:
After facing countless losses in my life, more than anyone should have to endure alone, I stumbled upon a lifeline. It wasn’t until I found myself painting on barnwood and began diving into Health Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Buddhist Psychology & Mental Health at the University of Toronto, and End-of-Life Doula training at Douglas College, that things began to shift. It wasn’t an instant fix, but these discoveries became my sanctuary from grief and led me to a newfound passion for helping others.
Why barnwood, you’ll ask? Painting on aged wood feels like a comforting hug (even if some splinters sneak in – they’re part of the charm). That grainy, knotty texture and its deep connection to nature unveil a whole spectrum of emotions. It remains my top choice for capturing life’s most intimate moments. The backstory and rugged texture add a distinctive depth, allowing for a natural connection with your emotions.
Commissioned Paintings:
A custom painting empowers you to materialize your vision instead of compromising on an artwork that might not entirely match your ideas. You have the freedom to select your subject matter from suggested themes and samples of my work or let your creativity soar to craft something entirely distinctive.
• Process:
The creative process involves attentive listening to your story and drawing inspiration from photographs to create an artwork that is not only unique but also deeply meaningful. Moreover, the texture of the wood canvas, with its knots, cracks, grooves, and grain, plays a pivotal role in shaping the final painting.
• Pricing:
A quote is determined by various factors, such as the size, wood canvas type, complexity and detail, and completion timeline of the piece. For Canadian customers, I accept payments via e-transfer, and for non-Canadian customers, PayPal is accepted. Kindly note that I do not accept cheques or e-cheques.
